A responsiveness to the needs of their fellow citizens allows PetroMasila management to provide assistance and donations in the areas it is most needed. As such, focus on community assistance covers the following four areas: health, education, water and electricity. Public Relations officer Mohammed Nasser crystalizes PetroMasila’s attitude towards surrounding communities in need of assistance when he says, “All requests should come from the communities themselves …they teach us.”
Changes in the town of Recip provide an example and reflection of PetroMasila’s need-based responsiveness to local communities. Seeing that people in Recip were dependent on local wells which provided water heavy in fluoride, company engineers located an area with clean, pure water 17 kilometers away, drilled a new well, and connected the well to the town with a network of pipes which also delivers the water to each individual home. Extended power cuts? Industrial strength generators were provided to make sure residents had power in the hours they need it most.
Four schools have also been established in Recip, fully equipped with furniture and computer and science laboratories. Much-needed medical equipment was donated to serve citizens at the local health clinic. Such attention by PetroMasila to the needs of citizens in surrounding communities allows people not only to do better in the present – it affords them the opportunity to invest in their own futures.
